Prince Turns to Frog

by staples

CHEN QIAO EN, MING DAO, SAM WANG, JOYCE ZHAO

Thoroughly average, but enjoyable.

ACTING: The actors were good, and all the characters had good chemistry with one-another. After watching Joyce Zhao be the “tough girl” in Smiling Pasta, I appreciated her acting ability more as she was the soft, girly-girl here. The most amazing part was when Zhao’s character had her little “mental breakdown.” Her acting there was superb. Chen’s acting during her amnesia was superb as well.

Smiling Pasta

by staples

CYNDI WANG, NICHOLAS TEO, GINO, JOYCE ZHAO

Another good starter drama. A little less innocent than Goong in parts.

ACTING: Actors are amazing and work really well together.

PLOT: Plot is good, it doesn’t drag and is pretty adorable all the way through (except when it’s ridiculously adorable). They do a fantastic job of creating an interesting plot despite the fact that the main couple gets together within the first 2 episodes.

ENDING: I give this a 10 because it probably has the best ending of any drama I’ve ever watched (though Goong had a good ending too). One drama cliche is that the angst must last until the 1-5 minutes of the drama, and then everything decompresses from there. It’s not that it doesn’t work 9 times out of 10 but one of the things I liked best about SP was that the angst was sprinkled throughout the entire drama and the ending was mild angst coupled with cuteness in such a way that made this the only drama I’ve ever watched until the very end. Twice.

OST: You won’t squeal from the memories, but there definitely is an attachment to some of the songs. Plus, you don’t have to be a drama addict to like some of them. It was after this drama that I started looking into Nicholas Teo’s music.

RATING: 10
